WE GOT US A SATELLITE!

By Kweku Tandoh
First-Year Student

The world today is seen as a global village. In April 2002, this village welcomed the newest addition to its citizenship: Ashesi University. With the acquisition of direct satellite connection to the Internet, backed by a reliable IT Management team, Ashesi is well on course to maintaining its hold on academic excellence through effective use and handling of information, research and communication in and outside the country.

Prior to the advent of direct satellite Internet connection, students were compelled to do research at public centers outside the school premises at extra cost to the school. Transportation to and from such centers disrupted class schedules and put some strain on the faculty and students to cover the time lost. Now high-speed connection to the Internet via satellite offers students the opportunity to effectively manage their time and search for information they may be interested in. "World Wide Wait" does not apply here because of quick and undisrupted connection.

On the flipside, students interested in using the internet for purposes of relaxation in forms like emails, instant messaging, music, chatting and "plain ol' browsing" are in heaven. Downloading information on any of these aspects of life in the electronic world is very quick. Students chat and browse without any difficulties. Like previously said, a major pastime for most of the students here is chatting with online friends and meeting new ones. Its enjoyment has been greatly enhanced because of quick internet access.

Initially there were a few problems when the satellite was being installed (which were to be expected), but our IT managers were up to the challenge. Now we are proud to say that everything looks fine and is smooth-running. The internet and the satellite have become irreplaceable additions to Ashesi's infrastructure due to its course structure. We hope that as we move forward, this facility will be properly maintained and enhanced.
