JOY FM EASTER SOUP KITCHEN

By Linda Fiah
First-Year Student

A Report on The Club's First Community Service and Social Outreach Program at the Hold Gardens, Kwame Nkrumah Circle

Activity: Joy FM Easter Soup Kitchen for the Street Kids, Orphans, Homeless & Less Fortunate of Our Society.

The following members of The Club represented the College: Maame Dufie Cudjoe, Kweku Tandoh, Regina Agyare, Steven Ocloo, Denise Oduro-Konadu, Linda Fiah, Richard Frimpong, Kofi Boateng and Seyram Ahiabor. We met on campus and left for the Holy Gardens, where we spent most of the day.

We had the opportunity to interact with students from The University of Ghana at Legon who had also attended this event. Students from the Common Wealth Hall at Legon were very sociable and friendly towards us, and they promised to invite us to their hall week celebration in April. We also interacted with students from Volta Hall, who were more reserved and somewhat formal with us. Our colleagues from the University of Ghana had heard about Ashesi but did not know that the College had actually started functioning. So our presence at the Holy Gardens had the added advantage of updating others on Ashesi's progress.

A lot of the homeless and the less fortunate of society patronized the program. They were more than we ever believed existed, and the majority of them were women and children. They all looked very hungry and fought amongst themselves for the food and clothing provided for them, although there was enough to go round.

We assisted in arranging the seats, sorting out the used clothes, peeling and bagging pineapples for the guests and serving food and drinks. We did this together with the students from the University of Ghana and Herman Gmeiner S.O.S School. More than a hundred people received a square meal that day, as well as clothes to protect them from the cold night on the streets of Accra. It was gratifying to know that we helped in making all the difference in the lives of these people on Easter, and it was very fulfilling to see the grateful and happy looks on their faces. The children were thrilled to celebrate Easter just like other kids all over the world.

We look forward to another program like this and hope that more of our Ashesi colleagues will participate. Our presence there was of benefit to the College and to us.
