LIBRARY UPDATE
By Denise Oduro-Konadu
First-Year Student
Greetings from the first floor of
Ashesi University's main building, and specifically from the Library. Ashesi formally began on the 4th of March 2002 and the library was also officially opened on that same day.
The Ashesi library is available to students and staff from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm from Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturdays. The library consists of the main stacks area and a reading room with capacity for 30 students. It also has a photocopying machine and a printer. Currently, the library has in stock over 500 books covering subjects which range from Commerce to African Literature. All the books are current.
The library stocks daily newspapers, as well as information from various sources including the World Bank and the Bank of Ghana. To enhance research, two computers, both with internet access, are also available in the library.
Our librarian, Mrs. Perpetual Dadzie, is a dedicated librarian with a wealth of experience from working with different libraries in Jamaica, Honduras, Togo and Ghana. Most recently, she served as an instructor at the University of Ghana. She is a mother figure to us, and advises us on how to make best use of the library.
Under Ashesi's work-study program, six students have been selected through an interview process, to assist Mrs. Dadzie in her work. These students are thus exposed to valuable work experience, and have been given the opportunity to earn their first pay.
Ashesi's library is currently not open to the general public; however there is a possibility that it may be in the future. With the exception of African literature books which may be borrowed over the weekend, the library is primarily a reference library. Most books in the library are for reference only (and may not be borrowed)
because the library currently only stocks single copies of most titles. Ashesi's library promises to grow to become one of the best libraries in the country.
In conclusion, I would say that the library wouldn't be effective without the support of the students and the care they take in handling the books and resources, and I would like to congratulate all of my fellow students for being so conscientious. Also, to the cleaners who make sure that the library is always neat, we say thank you. Finally, to
Mrs. Perpetua Dadzie and all the students who work with her to make the library what it is, keep the fire burning... A work well done!
