The Health Center
By Emelia Tobah, Nurse
The Ashesi Health Center has been designed to cater for the Clinical and the Public Health needs of both students and staff of the University. It has a full-time resident nurse, Mrs. Emelia Toba, and its main services currently offered include First Aid, Health Education, Counseling and Prompt Referral System. Relationships have been established with a physician and the emergency unit of a local hospital, in the event further treatment may be needed.
The Health Center became operational on the 2nd of April 2002. Shortly afterward, Mrs. Tobah held her first information session with the students on the topic of Sexuality and Relationships. This evolved into a lively discussion, which helped to break the ice and establish a positive rapport between her and the students. Other topics to be treated are HIV/AIDS, Sexually transmitted diseases, and other common illnesses, including malaria, hypertension, and diabetes. Most students now visit the center for any of its services or just to say hello. For many students, it has become a second home. Common illnesses treated so far include, headaches, stomach upset, fatigue, malaria and skin abrasions.
The Health Center works closely with Emmy's Canteen staff to ensure that high standards are met in all aspects of food service, by providing lessons in the areas of Personal, Environmental and Food Hygiene as well as Nutrition. It has successfully established ties with both public and private organizations in Accra, for the purpose of sharing of information, resources and guest speakers.

Perpetua Dadzie, Librarian
The Library is an integral part of
Ashesi University with the main purpose of supporting teaching, learning and research carried out by students and faculty. It has in stock a relevant collection of 500 titles focused on business administration and computer science with an integrated liberal arts collection. A local collection on the different aspects of the economy of Ghana is actively being pursued to facilitate students' project work. To keep users updated on current news and events, the library subscribes to newspapers, magazines and databases. A few examples are the Daily Graphic, the Ghanaian Times, Business and Financial Times and West Africa Magazine. The online IDEAL database which the library subscribes to has an impressive collection of journals in business administration and computer science.
The library again supports the learning process by providing interesting instructional sessions on the Internet presented by the Librarian, with the first lesson being on how to critically evaluate web resources.
There are a number of facilities which make our library so appealing and comfortable to use. It is air-conditioned, has two computers to assist with internet searches, a photocopier and of course, a reading room with a seating capacity of 30 for quiet reading and serious studies.
As part of the work study program a group of students are encouraged to work in the library in the evenings and on Saturdays. They help with the shelving of books and assist other students to locate materials on the shelves and online.
The library maintains the following opening hours:
Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Saturday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Facilities Enhancement
Casper Annie, Programme Coordinator
Hi Folks! Term one ended successfully and we are about to start term two. I believe you made efficient use of the facilities provided so far and derived maximum satisfaction from their use. Hip, hip, HURRAY! Term two will be even more interesting because we have provided more facilities that promise to further enhance the teaching/learning process and also cater for some aspects of social life on campus.

Mailboxes are now available for all students, staff and faculty members. All letters and documents can be picked up at your own convenience and will be safe because each box has a key.

A new stand-by generator set has been installed to provide electricity in times of black-outs. It is automatic and switches on immediately after we lose power from the main Electricty Corporation of Ghana (ECG) grid.
MULTI-MEDIA SYSTEM:
A Sony multi-media system has been installed in then main classroom to enhance teaching and learning on campus. Messrs Kofi Boateng and Patrick Quantson, both students, will be in charge of the equipment and ensure that other students do not fidget with it. Any use of the system other than for teaching and learning, must have prior permission from the Programme Coordinator or the Dean of Students.
2ND NORLA CAMPUS:
As part of Ashesi's campus expansion, a new site has been leased at 2nd Norla St. (just a three minute walk from our current campus) for more classrooms and offices. Renovations will soon begin to put the entire place in shape for academic work to begin in March, 2003.

Intravenous Infusions Ltd
Richmond Edor, First-Year Student
As part of Ashesi's goal of providing practical approaches to learning for its students, a trip was organized to the
Intravenous Infusions Ltd company located at Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This trip took place in the sixth week of term one, and its primary aim was to take the theoretical concepts we had been taught in our Quantitative Methods class - including forecasting, project management and simulation - and see how these concepts are applied in real life.
Mr.
Appenteng, the General Manager of the company, met us upon our arrival and gave us a brief overview of the company. This included the founding of the company, the composition of the board of directors and the structure of the company. He also educated us on various products manufactured by the company, with its main product being IV fluids. The company is well organized and geared towards producing high quality and very hygienic products and increasing efficiency so as to meet the demand of its market both locally and internationally.
Production at Intravenous Infusions Ltd. is both capital and labor intensive, providing employment for the environs of Koforidua. This helps in preventing rural/urban migration, sparing cities from further congestion. The company also provides infrastructure facilities and also help the community educationally.
The visit to the company and a follow-up seminar which was facilitated by Mr. Awuah, Ashesi's President, accorded us the opportunity to learn much about the company and Mr. Apenteng. Mr. Apenteng is a very dynamic leader who cares very much about his workers, a quality which has enabled him to keep his workers for a very long time.
All in all, the visit and the follow-up seminar were very useful. The seminar gave us the opportunity to relate our individual observations to our classroom work and to see how these concepts work in the field. It is indeed "A GREAT BEGINNING".

Time with David
Isaac Tuggun, First-Year Student
In line with Ashesi University's vision to groom and produce first-class global business executives and leaders who will be capable of competing with their peers anywhere, Text and Meaning was one of the courses offered during the first term. The purpose of Text and Meaning is to stimulate critical thinking in the students and to equip them with the prerequisite skills that will enable them to read or interpret objectively the varied and huge amounts of information in today's world. As such, a popular media colossus, in the person of Mr. David Ampofo, was invited to deliver a short lecture on the print and electronic media, major sources of today's information.
David Ampofo is a Ghanaian credited with an enviable international academic profile. In his introduction, he provided two documents to prove how the Daily Graphic and the Guide, both Ghanaian newspapers, had differed greatly in their reporting of a memorial lecture delivered at the University of Ghana by one of the renowned African professors, Ali Mazure. He also cited an example from the international media, where the British Prime Minister and the American President were shown on TV, accompanied by a broadcast that "the international community has decided to extend the sanctions on Saddam", thus reducing the international community to only Britain and America. Mr. Ampofo then cautioned that, as future business executives and world leaders, students of Ashesi University should always, from an impartial perspective, subject information being handled to critical analysis, bearing in mind that the authorial intent could be manipulative due to political, economic, relational, or emotional reasons. He added that, in this world where "seeing is believing," the electronic media is a very powerful tool, capable of creating a false sense of credibility that is hard to dispute. Scanning the Ghanaian media landscape, he lamented over the unwarranted polarization of the media.
Question time was a real hailstorm as numerous and various, simple and complicated questions were thrown at Mr.Ampofo. Ashesi's own "Time with David" was a great success. It was also a great tutorial as it reinforced students' faith in the lectures previously delivered on research methods, and reiterated certain key themes already deliberated on by the lecturer of Text and Meaning, Mr. Mark Poynter.
