Daring to Dream
IF ANYONE CAN ASHESI CAN
By Mark Poynter
Faculty Member
The
success of any university depends largely upon the quality of
its lecturers, students and resources, and here at Ashesi, we
are fortunate enough to excel in all three. The students
which I have taught display a thirst for knowledge and
willingness to learn which one could argue is typical of most
Ghanaian students. Except at Ashesi they are encouraged
to apply their knowledge and skills to various real life
situations. Therefore, the skills and knowledge which
they have acquired do not simply become dead dogma but a
living expression of who they are.
The
courses which I have taught include Text and Meaning and
Social Theory which are key elements to the liberal arts core
curriculum. These courses have been very ambitions and
inventive, using a multi-disciplinary approach which has
brought together topics as diverse as literature, philosophy,
tribal custom and current affairs all within a framework of
academic pursuit. The purpose of using this approach is
to challenge students to examine various concepts in new ways
so as to develop skills in critical thinking and analysis.
Despite this having been a very ambitious task the results so
far have impressed our Academic Advisors at Swarthmore and UC
Berkeley.
As the University's Founder and President, Patrick Awuah had a dream which many thought could never be realized, yet today, that dream has become a living reality. Now the President's vision is to build one of the finest business schools in West Africa, producing a caliber of student who is competent enough to face the challenges of the twenty-first century but who is also daring enough to do so despite the difficulties facing Ghana. Of course to many this may sound like an unrealistic task, but there again, if any can, Ashesi can!
