ASHESI SO FAR
By Yawa Osebreh
Class of 2006
I feel very privileged to be among the select few that were admitted to Ashesi this year. I guess you could say that I fell in love with Ashesi the minute I heard about it. Like most of my mates in secondary school, I was seeking admission to an American university. Having completed most of my elementary schooling in the United States and continuing here in Ghana, I felt that the best university education could only be found in the US. I therefore had no interest in going to any of the traditional universities in the country.
I had heard about Ashesi through newspaper advertisements. Yet, it was not until a friend of mine told me she had been there and liked what she saw, that I showed more interest. I guess that the saying, "seeing is believing" is indeed true! I was impressed by the enthusiasm expressed by faculty, staff and students that I was able to talk to during my campus tour. I had no doubt that Ashesi would be a place that I would be able to succeed. Ashesi is a small close-knit community; a place where everyone knows everyone else. I see that this makes for easy socialization amongst us. I am forming strong bonds here and it is not just with the other students. Faculty and staff are always there to lend a listening ear and words of encouragement whenever needed. As a result, I never feel alone here.
Here at Ashesi, I have had the opportunity to assume various leadership roles in my class, write for school publications, gain valuable experience from on-campus employment, and study with state of the art technology. But there are always opportunities for me to do more. Here at Ashesi we are always encouraged to take the initiative not as an exception, but as the rule. My experiences here at Ashesi have been wonderful so far and I believe that it can only get better!
