By Thomas Brien-Mensah
Class of 2006
Mr. Poynter is a lecturer at Ashesi University College where he teaches Text and Meaning, Social Theory, Leadership Seminars and Written and Oral Communication. His teaching style and enjoyable nature has made him one of the students' favorite teachers. This lecturer has inspired many students to analyze and critically asses the world around them.
Mr. Mark John Wenn Poynter was born on the 11th of July 1969, to proud parents Margaret and John, in the town of Reading in Berkshire, England.
Mr. Poynter spent most of his youth in South Africa. He attended Witbank High School in South Africa where he obtained his Senior Matriculation Certificate in 1988. After that he attended Natal Technikon in Durban, South Africa from 1989 -1991 where he obtained his HND (equivalent) in Theatre Technology. He later enrolled at De Montfort University in Leicester, England from 1995 - 2000 where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Politics in 1998. From 1998 - 2000, he pursued a Masters Degree in Politics and International Relations.
Apart from an extensive educational background, Mr. Poynter has a lot of working experience. From 1986 -1988, he was employed at the Witbank Cultural Centre and worked as a Front of House Personnel. His next working experience was as a Trainee Sound Technician at Natal Playhouse.
For a short period in 1992, he was employed as a factory worker at Tinsley Foods. Then from 1994 - 1995, Mr. Poynter was a Performing Arts Lecturer at Boston College, Lincolnshire. In 1998, he worked as a part-time cleaner at the Gleed Girls' School in Spalding, Lincolnshire and from 2000 - 2001 he was employed again at Boston College as an Adult Literacy and Numeracy Tutor. Concerning any future plans he might have, Mr. Poynter say he is receptive to any opportunity that may come his way.
Mr. Poynter decided to come to Ghana in order to escape the cold, wet English weather and be part of a new beginning called Ashesi and also bask in the Ghana's warm and sunny days. According to Mr. Poynter, "Ashesi has a vibrant sense of opportunism which provides him with opportunities of challenge and adventure." He also believes that if Ashesi can maintain its sense of momentum, it will make a significant contribution in shaping the future of Ghana.
His message to the Ashesi Community is that Ashesi is an excellent example of what can be achieved when people work together, and that sometimes, the sum of parts can be greater than the whole, so let's keep working together!
