ASHESI STUDENTS GAIN WORK EXPERIENCE THROUGH INTERNSHIPS
By Claud Kweku Hutchful
Class of 2006
Our last vacation was most interesting for some students. Two months of freedom from course work and the need for extra money was enough to drive a few to get jobs. It was an enlightening experience for everyone who worked over the vacation, no matter how small or large the pay was, the experience was worth it. The jobs ranged from web development and testing to teaching in high schools. Ashesi also offered internships to interested students; internships were available in the Admissions Office and the IT Department.
Sharon Beecham, Thomas Brien-Mensah, Charles Dollie, Derrydean Dadzie, Yawa Osebreh and Fatou Traore (Class of 2006) took up jobs with the Admissions Office of Ashesi. They managed data, welcomed and gave tours to visitors to Ashesi.
Seyram Ahiabor (Class of 2005) took up a job in the IT department at Ashesi University. He worked tirelessly and often times, single-handedly, to ensure that Ashesi's computer network was up and running for the semester ahead. He did a
marvelous job. We all owe him a big thank you.
Regina, Nii and Abdul Lateef (Class of 2005) also had internships at Ashesi University; their job description involved the development of the Ashesi internal web site. It was a lovely experience for them and the satisfaction that came after the website was published was very overwhelming. They now have the experience and know how of website development.
Many students worked in IT related jobs. Claud Hutchful (class of 2006) who spent his vacation in the UK, tested the Computer Aided learning Website for Stainless Steel Institute, a UK based company. Claud was hired alongside a programmer based in Georgia. He gained invaluable work experience there.
Some Ashesi students took up teaching jobs. Stephen Jantuah (Class of 2006) worked part-time at Bomso Christian Academy in Kumasi, where he attended high school. He taught Mathematics and English to Junior High school students. Stephen shares that he had a great time working with the students. Stephen acknowledged that Ashesi's Calculus and Expository writing courses gave him more knowledge to impart to the students. He also admits that he did a bit of learning himself; young people are really an invaluable source of knowledge.
It is reassuring that many students took advantage of the opportunity for internships not just to make money, but to acquire new skills that could be useful in their future career. It is wonderful Ashesi not only encouraged us to find internships, but also provided opportunities for them as well.
