ASHESI STUDENTS FORM NEW ORGANIZATION: THE AFRICAN RENAISSANCE MOVEMENT (ARM)
By Senyo Akaba
Class of 2006
The Africa Renaissance Movement (A.R.M.) is one of the newest student societies to be formed on campus. The movement has been formed to continue Mr. Patrick Awuah's vision of not just preaching excellence but going the extra mile to inject excellence into everything we do. The A.R.M. thus seeks to literally be the arm of the Ashesi's vision - extending the touch of excellence experienced at Ashesi to our neighbors and the communities in which we live. In the words of Isaac Tuggun, a founding member of the movement; "Africans have for too long wasted time sitting on radio stations to prescribe one minute solutions to Africa's problems. It is now time to bridge the gap between good ideas in the mind and those ideas being put to the test."
The movement seeks to focus on inspirational leadership at all levels of the social stratum (political, corporate, social, family, etc) with Ghana as the base and the rest of Africa at large. This movement offers a forum to discuss critical issues affecting the development of Africa and its people and proposing solutions them. It will also work towards maximizing the unfulfilled potentials of Africa and trying to bring back our lost pride - we in A.R.M recognize that Africans need to break away from dependence on the outside world for economic survival and compete in the universal struggle for dignity and equality. A.R.M. also aims at leaving long-lasting marks in the minds of members about the need for visionary leadership as they leave school to pursue their professional careers.
The movement shall achieve its aims by:
- appraising and proposing solutions to various issues that affect Africa and its youth.
- engaging in "real-time" projects aimed at addressing critical issues affecting Africa in the areas of education, culture, economics & politics, and technology.
- motivating people in all aspects of our life to get involved in finding solutions to Africa's numerous problems.
The membership of the movement is open to all students of Ashesi University. Honorary membership shall however be awarded to selected individuals who have distinguished themselves in various leadership roles outside Ashesi University. For the record, the founding members of the movement include Obinna Chuku (2006), Candy Ankrah (2006), Abdul Latif Issahaku (2005), Isaac Tuggun (2005), Denise Oduro-Konadu (2005), Daniel Ofori-Dankwah (2006), Senyo Akaba (2006), Abraham Nantogma (2005).
