Robotics: Faculty Perspective
By Dr. Nathan Amanquah
Chair, Dept. of Computer Science
The robotics class has introduced
students to advanced concepts and approaches to problem solving
in the real world. The program has equipped students with the knowledge
and tools to devise innovative solutions to everyday problems.
Solutions may require not just with computers or processing
power only, but also sensors and actuators that interact with
the real world.
Students have become better
programmers. Sometimes, robots have appeared to go awry or
“misbehave”, when in reality, they have actually followed the
detailed set of instructions given them to the letter. As
students observe firsthand the effects of their code on the
robots, they have learned to write code more logically and more
carefully.
It has been
fulfilling and satisfying for students to see the concepts
learned in class in action on the robots. It has been fun
building robots while learning sophisticated algorithms.
Students have always come away contented when their
demonstrations have worked according to plan, and even when they
have not been as successful, they have felt they had learnt
something.
