Summer Internships

By David Agbenyega
Class of 2009

Ashesi University cultivates working citizens by helping students find internships during the long break from classes.  The breaks become intellectual play-time where students gain some experience in the working world, away from the classroom. About 60 students this summer held internships in approximately thirty-five companies nationwide. Here are a few examples of what our students were up to this summer:

Obinna Chukwu, who is in his fourth and final year at Ashesi, worked as a Junior Copy-Writer with the Advertising and Sales Promotion Department of Origin 8.  Origin 8 is a leading advertisement and marketing agency in Ghana affiliated with Saatchi & Saatchi International. As part of his duties, Obinna brings his marketing theories to life by brainstorming with a team made up of two Art Directors and a Copy-Writer. The team creates and develops advertising concepts for its local and international clientele.

Senior, Charles Dollie worked in the Marketing Department at Combert Impressions, one of Ghana's leading printing houses.  Combert uses modern web presses to professionally print everything from stationary to full length books.  Charles enjoyed the open work environment and committed staff at Combert.  During his internship Charles felt he was able to learn a little about all aspects of running a successful business.  With plenty of new business rolling in the company is focused on ensuring that quality standards and time schedules always meet their customers needs.

Eugene Tetteh-Fio, Monica Beecham, Okyeame Manu-Sarfo and Victor Addotey spent the break working at Kasapa.  Kasapa is a major telecommunication company which provides mobile phone services to four of Ghana's ten regions. Eugene and Monica are sophomores and worked with the customer service department of Kasapa's Tema branch. Okyeame Manu-Sarfo and Victor Addotey worked in the Marketing and IT departments respectively.  These students are experienced first hand what life in the working world entails and feel Ashesi has prepared them for the challenge.
