Ashesi awarded Fulbright Senior
Specialist Programme grant

Ashesi has recorded another first; Ashesi is the first
Private University in Ghana to receive a Fulbright Senior
Specialist grant from the United States Government.
This Fulbright award will be used to support the work of
Prof. Richard Douglass who will be studying the needs of
Ghana's health sector and evaluating the development of a
health management curriculum at Ashesi. Prof. Douglass
is currently a lecturer at Eastern Michigan University in
the United States.
Grant for Fulbright scholar extended
for another year

We are happy to announce that Prof. Suzanne Buchele has
received Fulbright funding to extend her stay at Ashesi for
another year. Prof. Buchele, who is currently teaching
in Ashesi's computer science department, arrived in Ghana in
August 2006 from Southwestern University in the United
States. She comments that she really
appreciates the academic community at Ashesi and her
students. Prof. Buchele has been teaching Programming
2, software engineering, and discrete math. Prof. Buchele is a great addition to our
faculty and we are very happy that she has chosen to stay
with us for another year. She has taken a very active
role on campus, serving on important committees such as the
Honor Code Council and the Academic Programming Committee.
Prof. Buchele and her family are finding living in Ghana
enjoyable and fulfilling.
Ashesi student selected for
Goldman-Sachs Internship

Godson
Quaye, Graduating Class of 2009, has been selected to represent
Ghana at Goldman Sachs's Spring Internship Programme.
Godson will be flown to London to spend 10 days working at
Goldman-Sachs UK offices. The programme features seminars,
rotations around the business divisions, interesting assignments
and a range of social events. Through the internship Godson,
hopes to gain invaluable insight into the workings of an
international investment bank.
Godson said, "I want to become an expert in Industrial Relations
– a specialized area in Human Resource Management. I applied to
Goldman Sachs because I believe – based on its achievements as a
global pacesetter and emphasis on human resources as an asset of
key importance – it will be the ideal company to learn the
practicalities that exist in the Human Resource field."
This is the second year in a row that an Ashesi student has been
selected to participate in this globally competitive internship
programme.
Loryn Paxton joins Ashesi team

Ashesi University Foundation is happy to welcome Loryn Paxton to
the Ashesi team. Loryn will work part-time at Ashesi's
Seattle office as the Development & Public Relations
Coordinator. Loryn has over 15 years of experience working
in higher education and the non-profit sector. She
currently is also the Program Coordinator for the Comparative
Religions & Jewish Studies departments at the University of
Washington. Loryn received a BA in English from Ohio State
University.
Loryn has been a long time
supporter and volunteer at Ashesi, assisting us in coordinating
events and a major book drive in the past. In her role as
Development and Public Relations Coordinator Loryn will be a
primary contact for Ashesi's supporter base in the United States
and will work with national and local media to help ensure that
Ashesi's story is told to the widest possible audience.

Awuah, was among 250 people around the
world nominated Global Leaders 2007.
This
award by the World Economic Forum recognizes the
unique
contributions and potential
of
individuals
drawn
from a pool of 4,000 leaders around the world.
Klaus
Schwab, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum,
created The Forum of Young Global Leaders to be "a voice for
the future in global thought processes.” In his
words, “This unique global network has the potential to
tackle global challenges through knowledge sharing and
leveraging horizontal networks of collaborative platforms.
Together, they form a powerful international force for the
global common good.”

Ashesi's president assesses Ghana's educational system

In a wide
ranging speech delivered at the 2007 New Year's College at the
University of Ghana, Ashesi's founder urges education policy
makers to pay more attention to quality,
to take steps to return to a robust ecosystem of private and
public schools at all levels,
and to begin rebuilding the profession of education as a matter
of urgency.
