Ashesi welcomes the Class of 2022

September 10, 2018
The first week of September saw the Ashesi community welcome its largest class yet. Amidst warm hugs and goodbyes from family and friends, and hearty welcomes from student volunteers and staff, 322 freshmen joined the Ashesi community.

With their enrollment, the student body has grown to a little over 1,000; a long way from the 30 pioneer students who joined Ashesi some 16 years ago.

The Class, comprising 54% men and 46% women, was selected from across 14 countries, including a first from Burundi. Meanwhile, 42% of the class received some form of financial assistance.

“While the Class of 2022 is a combination of impressive academics, strong extra-curricular activities, and leadership potential, we took a critical look at the backgrounds of our students,” shared Araba Botchway, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. “Some applicants may have had to overcome barriers in one form or another, and may not post the strongest scores, however, show keen academic preparedness and promise – this we took note of, in building the class. All in all, our goal was to find that holistic student who not only would be a good fit for the community but also was ready to hit the ground running.”

In a packed, yet exciting week of orientation activities, many members of the class are already working their way into life on campus, making new friends and sharing experiences. “This is an exciting step in my life,” said Philip Akwei Sekyere’ 22. “I can’t wait to identify new spaces for growth here at Ashesi.”

The week ended in a colorful Matriculation ceremony with many freshmen garbed in their national and cultural outfits. Featuring memorable welcome messages from the President, the Provost, the Dean of Student Affairs and the Student Council, the Class of 2022 was officially inducted into Ashesi University.

We are excited to see stories they will create and the feats they accomplish on their four-year journey. Welcome to Ashesi, Class of 2022!
