Six Ashesi students have been selected as the first group of beneficiaries of the Old Mutual scholarship program at Ashesi. The six students, Victor Kafui Vorgbe ‘16, Mary Awortwi-Tandoh ‘16, Susana Konadu Abraham ‘17, Nana Araba Torson ‘17, Daniel Kwame Obiri ‘16 and Michael Kofi Dra Tamakloe ’17 were selected from a competitive group of applicants for the merit based scholarship.

As part of the introduction to the Old Mutual Ghana team, the students were hosted at the company’s headquarters in Accra where they were given a company-wide tour and had interactions with members of the Executive team. The Chief Executive Officer of Old Mutual Ghana, Chris Kapanga, congratulated the scholars and encouraged them to use the opportunity to keep pursuing their dreams. “At Old Mutual, we believe in helping people achieve their dreams,” he said. “The Old Mutual Foundation has helped a number of students around the world develop and achieve their dreams. As good corporate citizens, we want to help grow talent here in Ghana. So we have identified Ashesi as a partner we want to work with, because Ashesi seeks out success.”

He further challenged them to impact lives across the continent. “We also want to make a difference in the communities that we operate,” he added. “And as good citizens of Ghana, we hope that you will make a difference not only in your lives, but in the lives of others in Africa.”

Ebenezer Gwumah, Associate Director of Development and External Affairs, who accompanied the scholars on the trip, expressed Ashesi’s appreciation for the partnership with Old Mutual. “As one of our biggest supporters in Ghana, Old Mutual has made a great mark on the Ashesi community, and we believe that the students will live up to the commitment given them.”

On behalf of the scholars, Michael Tamakloe ’16 thanked the Old Mutual Ghana team and promised a commitment to excellence. “This is a very good opportunity for us,” he said. “Our career ambitions align very much with the goals of Old Mutual, and it is our belief that our work here in the futurewill demonstrate the benefit of this partnership. I want to assure you that we will do our best.”
