Ashesi Theater Society brings drama to campus life

October 17, 2018:
In the weeks leading up to October 11th, every noticeboard on campus featured posters decorated with a picture of eight people and a sole word at its center: Housemates. The first production of the freshly-minted Ashesi Theater Society, Housemates starred a diverse cast of students from various nationalities, year groups, and majors, and told the story of 6 young people living in a rented house owned by a tempestuous landlord.

Written by Manuela Doh ’21, who presides over the society alongside Kingsley Besidonne ’20, the play was an engrossing affair — attracting a large and appreciative audience who provided high energy – clapping and cheering throughout the showcase. The Ashesi Crewdx Dance Team also provided the crowd with a pre-show performance that set the tone for the night.

Most memorable were the laughs evoked by Oluwapeyibomi Oyelohunnu ’20, who played the landlord — a loud and grumpy quinquagenarian, the cheers garnered by Merveille Hounkponou ’21, who played Auntie Dee — the aunt and counsellor of many other characters, as well as the elaborate set decor, which transformed the venue, RB 100 into the living room of a four-bedroom house, complete with couches and a standing fan.

The Theater Society is one of many clubs at Ashesi which seeks to promote diversity in student interests, with a central focus in storytelling through the arts.

Students at Ashesi have the chance to create new clubs on campus to address the various opportunities for engagement which come hand in hand with the diverse and involved student population Ashesi boasts.
