Before they leave: Parting messages from the Class of 2018

July 11, 2018
It is always beneficial to be privy to useful information on campus and opportunities ahead of time. And who better to learn it from than recent grads? After four years at Ashesi, members of our graduating class are masters of navigating the Ashesi environment and seem to have all the coping strategies and solutions for different situations up their sleeve. This year’s graduating class of 2018 are definitely not leaving without sharing their two cents on college life at Ashesi with incoming and current students. So here’s to the newbies and the striving sophomores, juniors, and seniors:

“Try new things and always have an open mind! Take advantage of opportunities, they are limitless inside and outside Ashesi. See challenges as an opportunity to test yourself and grow. Make the right friends; friends that will love you, motivate you, correct you and are in line with your values. Most importantly, focus on you and find your purpose! Be selfish with your time and energy.”— Boma Eli

“Be open to change, appreciate who you, where you’re coming from and where you are at the moment. Also, learn and don’t miss your lectures! It will be hard but don’t give up & make the most of your university/Ashesi experience.” — Vanessa Sam

“Although grades are important, you mustn’t entirely depend on them if you want to develop your skills and gain more opportunities. You should socialize a lot with friends, strangers, and even your enemies. I also advise you to be open-minded and accept every opportunity with confidence.”— Michael Ohene Boampong

“Find a balance! A way to reward yourself after every impossible assignment or project! Dedicate one day in the week where you do something calming with your friends! Play Uno, eat or something you all like! The friends you make are the friends you have for life.” — Kingsley Amoaning-Yankson

“The one walking with the wise will become wise, but the one who has dealings with the stupid will fare badly. Peer pressure is real and success at Ashesi is dependent on the type of friends you make. Know yourself, both socially and academically and make a decision on who to include in your circle of friends. In all, be cool with everyone and ask for help.” — Mercy Asante”Life is made up of small moments, how you live these moments determines the quality of life you have. Plan your four years, take advantage of the great opportunities around you. Choose your friends wisely-they determine the memories you get to have of Ashesi. Have fun…chill! chill! chill!” — Fiona Muithi

“Students should try and add value to themselves, they should not only focus on getting grades. What I mean is, they should try to involve themselves in extra co-curricular activities, volunteering programs and working on their talents. There is something I have noticed in Ashesi, we spend time doing what we have to do and not what we love to do.”— Edrine Ssemwanga

“Read widely beyond your major; the world is much too complex for any major to handle — be curious. Do not be afraid to ask for help and be courageous to help others; be humble. Finally, be respectful.” — Maxwell Adalago
