Ashesi’s June-August break offers faculty and staff an opportunity to take stock of the previous year, prepare for the next and earn some well-needed rest. Ashesi’s campus, however, remains very much alive with activity, taking advantage of the break to engage with the larger public from all over Ghana, and Africa at large.
In partnership with corporate supporters, Ashesi’s Outreach Team runs programs for Ashesi students, senior high school students from across the country, young executives from the corporate world, as well as other professionals seeking to upgrade their career skills.
Africa lead “Champions 4 Change”
May 9th to May 13th
USAID, through its Africa Lead programme, is supporting the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme to boost Agriculture on the continent. The goal of Africa Lead is to build capacity among Africa’s food security leaders so they devise and manage effective investment plans in Agriculture. A key component of the Africa Lead Programme is a unique agro-centred leadership programme called “Champions for Change”. Champions for Change is a five day workshop where participants are taught effective ways to lead in developing, advocating for, and managing the positive change needed in Agriculture. Over the last several years, the implementing organisation for Champions for Change, DAI, has held dozens of this leadership workshop for over 1000 people across the continent. Participants have included leaders in government, business, universities, and think tanks across the continent.
YALI Network Elections & Civic Engagement Tech Camp
23rd May to 24th May
This initiative of the US State Department is aims to connect community leaders from the YALI Network with local and international technology experts and trainers. These experts and trainers will help participants and their organisations to communicate effectively with their network and organisations. Participants will explore ways to dig deeper into challenges and problems in grassroots organizing including the ability to reach wider audiences with creative messaging and innovative technologies. The programme will be led by Ashesi faculty Dr Gordon Adomdza and Rose Dodd.
MasterCard Foundation Tertiary Scholars Convening
16th June – 19th June
Ashesi is a major partner in the MasterCard Foundation Scholars programme. This year, Ashesi will host the global MasterCard Foundation Tertiary Scholars Convening. This 3 day programme, which was hosted by Stanford University in summer 2015, provides an opportunity for MasterCard Foundation Scholars from various universities in the world to connect, learn from each other, and strengthen the bonds of collaboration which will facilitate their work in the future as effective agents of change. The Ashesi MasterCard Foundation team will be responsible for managing this programme.
Speedup Africa
6th July to 10th July
DraperDarkFlow, a Silicon Valley based venture capital firm, will hold 4 days, hands-on workshop for 100 start-up entrepreneurs from all over Africa. SpeedUp Africa will involve one-on-one mentorship, workshops, office hours, growth hacking, and 10, 000 USD in start-up toolkit for all participating start-ups. The aim is to get these start-ups to scale-up speedily. At the end of the programme, DraperDarkFlow plans to invest a million dollars in the most impressive start-ups.
ARCOM Doctoral workshop
27th to 28th July
The Association of Researchers in Construction Management, ARCOM, will hold a two-day workshop to explore the principles, management, implementation and delivery of sustainable infrastructure. The workshop will provide a platform for participating doctoral students to share empirical insights into the link between infrastructure delivery and economic growth. The workshop will explore topics like financing infrastructure delivery in Africa; public-private partnerships and infrastructure delivery; procuring infrastructure in Africa; infrastructure maintenance and facilities management among others.
Ashesi Innovation Experience
7th August to 22nd August
The Ashesi Innovation Experience is an intense and exciting two-week enrichment program developed by faculty at Ashesi for senior high school students between the ages of 15 and 20. AIX expands the vision and broadens the aims of students, inspires them, challenges them, and equips them with concrete skills for innovation in the 21st Century: skills in leadership, design thinking, entrepreneurship, robotics programming and engineering.

iTeach
22nd August to 26th August
This will be the third successive year that Ashesi hosts this computing course for public school teachers in Ghana. The aim of the programme is to enable basic school teachers around the country to proficiently use ICT for their own continuous learning and also to be able to deploy it in their work as educators. The Programme is organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers and DreamOval Foundation. This year, 60 teachers from the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana will participate.
