Computer Engineering
Class of 2019
At Ashesi, I study Computer Engineering. As a kid, I had the habit of dismantling gadgets and trying to put them back together. My curiosity for computers combined with my passion for design led me to make the decision in junior high school to be a computer scientist, as a way to fuse technology and art. As I grew, I decided that computer engineering was a more suitable fit because it comprises both hardware and software. I chose to follow my passion at Ashesi and I must say it is the best decision I’ve made yet. Studying Computer Engineering has presented me with a pool of career opportunities. It has not only fulfilled my desire to fuse technology with art but also opened me to possibilities I couldn’t see when I decided to pursue the major.
In the early part of this summer, I spent time working as a freelance artist. I created several illustrations and worked to improve my skills. Later on, I took two summer courses — Big Data and African Cities. During the African Cities course, I got the chance to learn a lot about the history of Ghana during the pre-colonial and colonial times. The field trips gave me the opportunity to see parts of Accra I had never been to. The research done during the course helped me build confidence in approaching and speaking to people, and also how to encourage people to let their guards down and open up. The remaining three weeks after summer school were spent reading and watching personal development videos. In those three weeks, I got to understand that my brain is my greatest asset. I had always tried to avoid reading by convincing myself that I didn’t need to read to be successful. The time spent, which began by binge-watching motivational videos, opened me up to the idea of reading and I am proud to say that now I read one book a week. I love to read, and I love sharing everything I find interesting.
As an artist, it is no surprise that my favorite engineering course has been Website Development and Computer-Aided Design — both of which involve designing. These have opened me to careers in branding and advertisement, web development, and content illustration. For activities on campus, I enjoy table tennis every Friday night and the seasonal female soccer matches organized by the Ashesi Football Association.

Every time I see the deduction of the tuition on my bill, I thank God and the people who made it possible. Because of them, I have had the chance to attend this great institution, which has shaped my thinking and perspectives. I have had the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them without any dire consequences because, in the world outside school, mistakes come at a cost. I say a big thank you to the donors and encourage them to continue doing what they do, because every little thing counts in shaping the future of the beneficiaries, to shaping to my future.
My goals for my future career are to read extensively and participate in conferences and leadership programs to develop myself and increase my potential. I also plan to:
– Work on projects after school, to establish relationships with companies of interest
– Spend time with people who are successful in my chosen career path
– Know a little about a lot to make it easier to adapt to changes
– Acquire an MBA
– Develop leadership skills
– Acquire assets at a job while I plan my tech company
– Develop communication and motivational skills
– Become a motivational speaker and write books
