Mastercard Foundation CEO, Reeta Roy, reflects on Ashesi’s 20th Anniversary

Reeta Roy with Mastercard Foundation Scholars at AshesiAs Ashesi celebrates 20 years this year, the Mastercard Foundation also celebrated the decennial anniversary of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme. Launched in 2012, the Programme began as an initiative to develop the next generation of leaders who would drive social and economic transformation. Ashesi University, marking its first decade at the time, was among the nine pioneering institutions to welcome Mastercard Foundation Scholars to its campus. It was also the only African University to join the Scholars Programme network at the time. Today, roughly half of the Mastercard Foundation’s partners are African institutions.

As Ashesi celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the CEO of the Mastercard Foundation, Reeta Roy, visited campus to spend time with Scholars and reflect on the shared impact of Ashesi and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme. To date, Ashesi has welcomed more than 800 Scholars, young Africans making a significant difference across Africa and the world. In this address recorded on campus and shared at the University’s 20th-anniversary celebration in October, Reeta Roy reflects on how our partnership has inspired the work of the Mastercard Foundation.
